Is Split or Dubrovnik Better to Visit?

4 min

When you only get a small amount of time each year to get away, it can be difficult to decide between destinations. It’s that eternal fear: the fear of missing out. Who knows what you might miss if you choose one place over another?

This is a problem lots of people have when they visit Croatia. An underrated gem on the Adriatic, Croatia offers so much: beautiful sandy beaches, delicious cuisine, impressive culture and history, and lots more besides. But where should you visit in your limited time: Split, or Dubrovnik?

Is Split Worth Visiting?

Split is an excellent place to visit if you want to explore the Dalmatian Coast. With its mixture of medieval and Venetian architecture, it’s a city that has something for everyone. Its unique, fascinating history mean that UNESCO made part of Split a World Heritage site in 1979.

Plus, there are some excellent day trips that you can take from Split, such as a trip to the Krka National Park or Hvar Island.

Is Dubrovnik Worth Visiting?

If you want to visit a city that feels like it’s stepped straight out of a fairytale, Dubrovnik is the place for you. With its imposing walls and baroque architecture, it’s easy to see why this city became known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic".

An excellent choice for a Croatian city break with its well-preserved medieval walls and stunningly clear waters, it’s easy to see why Dubrovnik is such a popular destination. Plus, with plenty of bars and restaurants, you’ll never be short of things to do there.

Which Is Better? Split or Dubrovnik?

So, which is the better destination to visit: Split or Dubrovnik? It honestly depends on what you’re looking for in a holiday.

If you want plenty of activities to keep you busy, then Split is probably the better choice. That's because it's the largest coastal city in Croatia and is second only in size to Zagreb. So, whether you're looking for fine dining, exciting nightlife, or just places to go and people to see, Split comes out on top.

If you want history, both make a good destination—while neither is particularly known for its museums, both have beautiful architecture and nearby historical sites for you to enjoy. Split first grew as a city around Diocletian's Palace, dating back to the 4th century AD, and features perhaps the best-preserved Roman architecture in the world. Dubrovnik, however, has a beautiful Old Town, ancient walls, and palaces and cathedrals of its own.

If you want stunning coastal scenery, well, both are on the coast! In that case, it might come down to personal preference. If you're looking for a more secluded getaway, Dubrovnik is probably the better choice; if you're after a livelier atmosphere, Split is where you'll want to be.

What Helps with Motion Sickness on a Cruise?

5 min

If you're prone to motion sickness, you may think that a cruise isn't for you. Whether you’re travelling by train, plane or cruise liner, you might find yourself feeling queasy even thinking about moving. What you might not know is that there are lots of ways you can deal with motion sickness on a cruise. As cruise experts, we know a thing or two about sailing, and that includes avoiding sea-sickness ourselves. That's why we've made this post passing on our simple tips and tricks!

1) Avoid reading or using electronic devices

One of the best things you can do is avoid reading or using electronic devices. The motion of the boat can make your motion sickness much worse, so it's best to steer clear until you feel better. That’s because you’re angling your neck and head downwards, which affects your feeling of balance. Putting your focus somewhere else can actively help with your sea-sickness. Looking in the direction of travel towards the horizon is best. So, put away your phone or book and take in the view!

2) Eat light, and avoid greasy foods

When you're feeling queasy, it's best to stick to light and easy-to-digest foods. That means avoiding greasy or fried foods, which are harder for your stomach to process. Avoid any kind of food that will sit heavily in your stomach, and instead, try eating small meals throughout the day instead of big ones. Aside from that:
  • Avoid spicy foods
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Avoid big morning meals in particular
Besides that, make sure you drink lots of water, too! While drinking far too much can leave you feeling sloshy, not drinking enough—especially if you're out all day in the hot sun—can leave you feeling sick on top of your normal sea-sickness.

3) Try ginger: sweets, biscuits, tea or soda

Ginger is a great way to calm an upset stomach, and it can be especially helpful against motion sickness. There are lots of different ways to eat or take ginger so find the one that works best for you. Some people find that eating ginger in sweets or biscuits form helps them feel better. Taking your time and nibbling on a biscuit or sucking on a hard sweet is particularly helpful. If you're not a fan of the taste, you could try having ginger tea or even drinking ginger ale or soda mixed with something. Ginger comes in many different forms, so there's sure to be one that you find palatable and helpful against your motion sickness.

4) Close your eyes and breathe slowly

Another thing you can do when you start feeling motion sick is to close your eyes and breathe slowly. The reason this helps is that focusing on how you feel can make you feel worse. Of course, it's easier said than done to avoid this. But when you're sat feeling miserable, only thinking of how bad your motion sickness is, it amplifies its effects and makes it worse. Instead, finding some way to relax and take your mind off it is good. If you've ever done yoga or meditation, closing your eyes and breathing slowly is ideal. If not, then perhaps try listening to some calming music.

5) Stay in the middle of the ship, and/or on lower decks

Another great way to avoid motion sickness on a cruise is to stay in the middle of the ship, and/or on lower decks. This is because the higher up you are on a boat, the more movement you'll feel from the waves. If you're feeling sick, try to find a spot near the centre of the ship where the movement is minimised. And if you have your choice of cabins, the best room on a cruise ship to avoid motion sickness is in the middle of the lower deck.

6) Take over-the-counter or prescription medication

If you're still feeling sick after trying all of the above tips, or you’re looking for a cure for motion sickness after a cruise, then it might be time to take medication to help. There are lots of different medications available, so it's important to speak to your doctor or pharmacist beforehand and find out which one is best for you. The most common/best motion sickness medicine for cruises is either promethazine teoclate, cinnarizine or hyoscine. Some pharmacists even prescribe antihistamines for motion sickness. There are both tablets and patches available, so if you don't like pills, you have other options. There's also something called an 'acupressure band,' although these don't work for everyone. Some people find that prescription medications work better for them than over-the-counter ones, so it's worth checking with your doctor to see if they can prescribe something for you.

What is a Private Cruise Ship Charter?

4 min

There’s nothing like a cruise ship holiday, although they aren’t for everyone. You may not like spending so much time around big groups of people, or you may want a more bespoke experience. If you're looking for a unique and luxurious way to experience cruising, then a private charter might be just the thing for you. But what exactly is a private charter cruise, how do you book one, and what can you do on one? Let’s find out.

What is a private charter cruise?

A private charter cruise is simply a cruise that is booked exclusively for your group. This means that you have the entire ship (or yacht) to yourself, and you can enjoy all of the amenities that it has to offer. Not all cruise liners offer this facility. Needless to say, huge cruise liners are built to accommodate hundreds and hundreds of people. As such, smaller boats for a dozen or two dozen people are used for private charters instead.

How do private cruise charters work?

Booking a private charter is like booking a regular cruise. You approach the provider and book! Private charters work in one of two ways: all-inclusive or itemised. An all-inclusive charter has a set price that you pay upon booking, which includes food and drinks, fuel, on-board entertainment and anything else set up for you to enjoy on your time away. An itemised charter is one in which you pay to book the yacht, and then pay separately for everything else through an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA). This is like a cover charge, from which an itemised total is taken, as if settling a tab. As for booking the kind that you want, that's all sorted out before you go. Booking is easy: you pick the charter specialist you want to book through, pick your yacht and destination, fill out any relevant paperwork, and get ready to go. It's as simple as that. With a luxury experience like a private yacht charter, the details are taken care of for you.

What can you expect on a private chartered cruise?

A private charter cruise is the perfect opportunity to indulge in all of the good times that cruising has to offer. You can enjoy exclusive access to VIP treatments, service that goes above and beyond, and a Jacuzzi-and-champagne lifestyle that is all yours to enjoy. Plus, you'll have plenty of time to relax and soak up the sun on deck. The key thing to remember is that everything is taken care of for you. We plan the route and itinerary, stopping off at beautiful port towns, secluded beaches and hidden coves along the way. We even offer a complementary transfer to the airport for your travel home. All you need to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

Why go on a private chartered cruise?

There are a number of reasons why you might want to go on a private charter cruise. Maybe you're looking for an intimate and luxurious experience with your friends or family. Or maybe you want to celebrate a special occasion in style. Whatever your reasons, a private charter cruise is sure to be a memorable experience.

What can you enjoy on a private chartered cruise?

A private charter cruise offers the chance to do everything or nothing at all! You can make use of the ship's facilities, relax on deck, take in the sights and sounds of your surroundings, or even book some special excursions. The choice is yours.

Average private cruise price

So, how much does a private cruise cost? Not as much as you might think. The cost of a private charter cruise will vary depending on the ship, the length of the cruise, and the number of people in your group. However, you can expect to pay a premium for this luxury experience. At Zantium, our private boat cruises start at just 1490 Euros.

Where to find ‘private cruises near me’

With so many charter cruise ships to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you? The best way to start is by considering your needs and wants. What type of ship do you want? How long should the cruise be? What destinations are on your wish list? Once you have a good idea of what you're looking for, you can start comparing cruises and prices to find the perfect one for you. So, ready to book your private charter cruise? Zantium offers a variety of routes and liners to choose from, so you're sure to find one that's perfect for your needs. Take a look at our website today to learn more!

However, many people find that the autumn months offer the perfect mix of mild weather and pleasant temperatures. Whichever time of year you choose, you can be sure that the yoga cruise experience will be unforgettable.
