Today in Diocletian’s Palace you can find less than 2000 people living inside the walls. Once upon a time number of inhabitants was more than 5 000 but as more tourists recognized Split as a great destination, a lot of original inhabitants moved outside of the Palace and their homes were made into apartments, heritage hotels and small luxury hotels.
Today the remains of the Palace are part of the historic core of Split, which in 1979 was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site
In November 1979, UNESCO adopted a proposal that the historic city of Split built around the Palace should be included in the register of World Cultural Heritage.
Reason for that is not just because Palace is well preserved but because since it was built at the turn of the 4th century AD people are living there continuously for more than 1700 years.
