The Roman Emperor Diocletian, the first to abdicate the Empire voluntarily, built Diocletian’s Palace on the Croatian Split Peninsula. Construction of Diocletian’s Palace took 10 years and was completed in 305 AD. The palace was built from white stone from the island of Brač. The interior was decorated with marble imported from Italy and Greece, and columns and sphinxes were imported from Egypt.
